Chairperson: Shannon Vandewege Focus: Healthy Children -- Healthy Challenge Placements available: 20 The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc., is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. This year, JLL will partner with Hy-Vee to do a Healthy Challenge for youngsters—focusing on underserved and New American kids in Lincoln—that will teach how to shop for healthy food economically and encourage families to sit down together for at least one meal a day. This educational initiative will help children learn how to read nutrition labels and understand the USDA food pyramid. A grocery store tour will be a part of the experience—shopping for ingredients for a kid-friendly dinner menu. During the grocery store tour, kids may shop for ingredients for a specific dinner menu. A kid-friendly version of the Kids in the Kitchen family meal planner includes room for children to insert ingredients for their shopping list sorted by the areas of the food Pyramid. Using the shopping list, the children will shop for key ingredients that would make up a nutritious, delicious family meal. Concluding the event will be an interactive demonstration of the meal preparation. ***********************************************************************************************************
