JLL Donation to Lincoln Literacy Council

Junior League of Lincoln Honors Lincoln Literacy Council With Donation

October 14, 2009 -- Lincoln Literacy Council has been honored with a $2,000 contribution from the members of Junior League of Lincoln. At the League’s General Membership Meeting, held October 12th, JLL Community Vice-President Julie Rogers presented the check to Lincoln Literacy Council's executive director, Clayton Naff.

Junior League has been partnering with Lincoln Literacy Council for several years now in its efforts to help refugee women master English and find their footing in the community through development of entrepreneurial skills.

Additionally, Junior League members volunteer their time and talent in Lincoln Literacy Council’s FLAIR program, which helps the young children of immigrant and refugee families to get their hands on books, learn to read, and gain the skills they to succeed in school.  “The current community focus for the Junior League of Lincoln is new American women and children so working with Lincoln Literacy Council is a perfect fit for us,” said Susan Crotteau, President of the Junior League of Lincoln.

Junior League of Lincoln is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Lincoln Literacy Council, founded in 1972, remains a widely respected nonprofit organization with more than 250 active volunteers. It partners with more than 20 community organizations to provide English language and literacy services to more than a thousand adults and children from over 60 countries now living in our community. The Council also continues to fulfill its historical mission of tutoring to homegrown Americans who need help to improve their reading or writing skills.

On receiving the check, Naff said he was stunned by the members’ generosity, but extremely grateful all the same. “We are facing a tough year ahead, as are many nonprofits. This contribution will really help us keep our programs going.”
